You went and fell in love now that changes things completely. You thought you were above the shaky knees and sweaty hands. You were so bold and in control, now this ruins all your plans. No one ever said we would understand what happens when we fall in love. You gambled with your heart now you’re gonna have to share it. Even that tender part that he will never understand. But there it is, you gave it up, you went and placed it in his hands. No guarantees, rules or demands are delivered when we fall in love. Of all the things you could have done this is the least convenient one. Trembling on the precipice Darling, now you’ve really made a mess of this. You went and lost your mind you won’t find it by denying the self you left behind has no place where you now stand. You can’t retrace or erase with some magic backward glance. This is your time, no second chance to fall back on when we fall in love. What in the world are we thinking when we fall in love?

The Lie 05:05
You try but you just can’t help yourself, you see the lie you take it down from the shelf and try it on for size and you find that it fits the situation just fine it gets you out of hot water this time, you turned it into wine with just a little white lie. When you lie somewhere a pig earns his wings and can fly, you can be most anything you put your mind to it, brother pluck another story from the vine and things will work out fine Hey Sherlock, when you said “hey, it wasn’t me” were you shocked to learn that anyone could see the chocolate on your face and that piece of missing cake? But you wow us with a simple explanation and a vow that’s just plausible enough somehow to plant a seed of doubt and let you wriggle out. When you lie somehow the shambles that you’ve made of your life goes up in a puff of smoke so don’t you choke on it, brother pluck another story from the vine and so on down the line Spin another tale and soon the minnow is a whale that you don’t recognize. Best leave a trail of breadcrumbs lest the real you succumbs to the lies, the lies, the lies, the lies, the lies… One lie leads to another till we all lose sight of each other, livin’ one lie leads to another till we all lose sight of each other. Never fear, we mostly hear what we want to hear and we all want to believe, so steer the message clear of a thread that’s better lost. Besides, is it really such a crime if some Einstein should attach a different meaning? Fine—we all know that line was made just to be crossed.

Here you come again, walkin’ down the street that look of cool disdain for everyone you meet. So self-contained, and that’s no mean feat in these here troubled times. But there in your facade is a tiny crack it’s letting in some light, but fear pushes back. Just what are you afraid of? It’s what we’re made of, these crooked family lines. If the sun forgets to shine if the sun forgets to shine get your money back, no questions asked if the sun forgets to shine If your glass is half full, shrink yourself down, dive in and take a swim, you ain’t gonna drown, and if it is half empty, well then there’s plenty of air to go around. If the northern lights keep you up at night don’t toss & don’t you turn, don’t you fuss & fight, go dancin’ with the stars, son, and do it right, get lost and you’ll get found. Runnin’ from the rain, what’s it gonna gain you just to hide inside? It’s not gonna last, you can let it pass or you can be a brave fella and reach for that umbrella. Don’t run with the mob, never let them rob you of your own sunshine. Keep it in a jar so that anywhere you are you know it will get better don’t blame it on the weather. I was a sad galoot, and obtuse to boot, no one could ever reach in and pull the root of my troubled youth and the stubborn truth that fed the greater lie. I think I’ve heard enough discouraging words watch what you think, careful who you hurt ‘cause we can choose to lose these tear-down blues, at least we have to try. Get your money back no questions asked, if the sun forgets to shine, if the sun forgets to shine, if the sun forgets to shine.

Migrator 04:26
Soon…flying over oceans by the light of harvest moon. Death-defying feat as heart and wing both beat in tune. Tune in to the stars. Now set your clock upon the flock as you pass over the equator. As on you fly, goodbye, migrator. Home…home is where the heart is but a part of yours stays gone. Somewhere there’s a meadow and it echoes with your song. Echoes from afar. And you are practiced in the art of storing up a part for later. All in good time sublime migrator. Go…stirring in your soul a budding feeling that you know. Feel the axis turn, what you discern will only grow. Eye upon the mark. I wish you all good health, you’ll find that in yourself lies something greater; The strength you need, Godspeed, migrator.

You were crying in your sleep what were you dreaming? Was it just nothing? Or something stirring in the deep? Here on the surface, it feels like we’re drifting. A shoot pushing up out through a crack a sun-seed that needs to blossom. A fight for the light defying the night it’s no time to err toward caution. You were crying in your sleep it wasn’t just nothing. All God’s children got joy sometimes it’s buried are we unworthy? Every girl and every boy bound to this hour hurting for power. A bird in the hand, a line in the sand a sign that you never noticed. The sun in your eyes, a naked disguise and finding it hard to focus. All God’s children got joy How did we not know this? If I could find another way I would trace it all back today Somewhere I lost you, and I fear it’s cost you. All the wishing in the world won’t buy a minute over the limit. You’ve been praying for a wave now that you’re in it you don’t want to swim it. Rain on the glass and cars gliding past your temple against the window. You drifted off and you missed your stop you wake with a start and don’t know which way you will go. You were crying in your sleep You were crying in your sleep You were crying in your sleep what were you dreaming?

Make Me 03:12
Here in my coccoon, is it too soon to make a break with the past? There in your tower, you wield the power now the spell has been cast and I’m stumbling lost on the chessboard dodging your pawns and your knights running out, more or less, on chances to get this right. I’m what you make me, take me over the line. Bend me, don’t break me I’m gonna shape up just fine. For one heartbeat life was sweet all the world was my stage but then Time swung His blade, I was waylaid by a turn of the page Now I’ve fallen out of the story losing my place in the line blinking out of the glory blind in the full sunshine. I’m what you make me, take me over the line. Bend me, don’t break me I’m gonna shape up just fine. Here at the edge of the ledge one small step means everything, Taking heart, taking wing…

Do or Die 05:03
The picture on the fridge that used to make me smile I haven’t taken time to look at in a while There’s something I never noticed in your eyes. What’s that they say, the camera never lies? I drop it in the box, ‘cause I can’t seem to bring myself to face the future or to part with anything. We don’t get another lifetime to decide. We won’t get a second chance to override. Maybe you failed to notice, we’ve drifted out of focus. If you no longer see me, who am I? You never take my meaning, I find myself careening How did it ever come down to do or die. When I was at my worst, and no one else could see you took on the curse and bled along with me. I know that there have been times karma was due but I would pay any price for you All the times that we’ve tried, can we really be done? All that was buried inside now to scorch in the sun. All the hopes that we hide and the dreams we’ll never say… I guess I just can’t believe today is that day. Today is not that day.
8.
I came round to your house again. I knocked and tried the phone. I peered in through the glass this time; the furniture was gone. You didn’t have the courtesy to look me in the eye, acknowledge who you were to me, or even say goodbye. I guess I’ll never understand, I never will know why. I’m living in between the lines I’ve fallen through the cracks. I don’t know if this heart of mine will ever make it back. I finally went to see your mother. I ambushed her at work. I guess that was unfair of me. I guess I was a jerk. The Russian aristocracy, so cold and very grand, trained her ruthless eye on me and dismissed me out of hand. To never see or hear from me appears to be the plan. I’m living in between the lines I’ve fallen through the cracks. I don’t know if this heart of mine will ever make it back. I guess my little tragedy began to be a drain and you had had enough of me, my pain was not your pain. I’m living in between the lines I’ve fallen through the cracks. I don’t know if this heart of mine will ever make it back.

Janie’s got a problem, it got out of hand she’s messing with forces she can’t understand. But though she’s in a tailspin with nowhere to stay her dreams are just one scratch-off ticket away. Don’t it seem like a small price to pay? When you’ve fallen behind but you’ve made up your mind here’s to hopin’ the reward fits the crime. If the rumors are true they keep whisperin’ to you Well, you know it’s just a matter, a matter of time, yes, you know it’s just a matter of time. I see by your trajectory you’re takin’ a fall— or maybe the sky’s upside down after all. In which case you’re flying, we just never know if up’s really down till we up and let go, now your gravity’s starting to show. What you’re hoping to find’s on the far distant side of that hill it takes a lifetime to climb. If the rumors are true they keep whisperin’ to you Well, you know it’s just a matter, a matter of time, yes, you know it’s just a matter of time. I’m like a vintage Chevy, I’m still on the road but some of my parts have begun to let go. Now it don’t really matter if you’re fat or you’re thin, it’s all a moot point once the rotting sets in, in the end Mr. Skeleton wins... Peel the layers away and the onion’s passé all you’re left with are the tears you’ll be cryin’ If the rumors are true they keep whisperin’ to you Well, you know it’s just a matter, a matter of time. When you’ve fallen behind but you’ve made up your mind just keep praying the reward fits the crime. If the rumors are true they keep shouting at you all the dreams and the schemes they keep force-feeding you, Oooh -- ooh -- ooh… Well, you know it’s just a matter, a matter of time, yes, you know it’s just a matter of time.

Fourteen angels once had heartbeats, birthdays and favorite shoes. The daily news just told me. This was gunfire. Not a knife, not a baseball bat— bullets are less intimate than that, that’s why we choose them. Count breaths. Count out steps. Try to get through the day as the churchbells keep on chiming and choirs sing. Timing is everything. If she had just called in sick— No, don’t go there…just let go. Counting the dead as the politicians chime in once again, risking nothing. If fourteen angels could shout we would drown them out with opinion. Fourteen angels— are they watching? Do they pray for our souls? Some things we can’t let go. Some things we can’t just let go. How do we dare to let go?

I lay me down when the day is done and all my cares trot out one by one to parade through my head till dawn, and the litany doesn’t let up till it’s time for me to get up. Carolina Wren, you little sprite here you come again to slay the night. When your morning song ushers in the light Carolina Wren you’re such a welcome sight. Best laid plans, well they came and went Built on sand and savings spent. I’m giving up my dreams for lent but I’m keeping one eye open ‘cause I’m a hopeless case for hopin’ Carolina Wren, you little sprite here you come again to slay the night. When your morning song ushers in the light Carolina Wren you’re such a welcome sight. Dragon in my head whispers flames and leaves my dreams for dead and I’m almost taken in… but Carolina Wren, you little sprite here you come again to slay the night. Bring your morning song, put this old world right Carolina Wren… Carolina Wren…

Give It Away 04:10
Now the sun is closing up shop for the day and the birds falling silent tuck their wings away but there’s one in my tree who still has more to say and he sings so sweet, it’s the song to beat you could have sold it for gold but he just gives it away. Meet me down on the corner at the old café where we’ve smiled as we’ve whiled so many hours away. Though the time may draw near when we’ve no more to say I want to see your face, in this familiar place… I’ve got some dreams left in my pocket I want to give away. I hear the night choir rehearsal on the vesper breeze and I have to pause for the moment and let it wash over me. All the birds have come down from the sky today and the evening falls silent, empty, cold and gray. Though these hours bear no profit, still we pay and pay with our life’s blood gold and the hopes that we’ve sold. We have a chance to break even but why don’t we give it away? Give it away.

about

For his latest release, Woltil bridges the gap between the gentle acoustic-based fare of his critically-acclaimed 2014 solo debut "Paper Boats" and the more full-band, baroque-pop leanings of his work with The Ditchflowers and Steve Robinson.
